Introduction to Aimpoint Line

By Jessie Indracusin

Background

I have had various questions asked about optics over the last couple of years. I wanted to provide a fairly quick overview of the optic lines that are out there. Personally, I am a fan of only four brands, they all tend to fall in different categories for me too. For Tactical Shotguns, I like the C-More line of optics. For long range precision rifles, I tend to be a Leopold bigot. So then now it comes down to the tactical reflex sights.

I have been a fairly big fan of Eotech optics for quite a while. It was a decent product for an all around decent price. I actually own many of the Eotech line and have been slowly migrating off of them. Let me explain why.

My problem with Eotech’s have been shooting long range with them. The ring dot combo tends to create an almost radiated glow in the optics. This makes shooting a target that is a great distance a way, harder and slower to shoot. I found that looking around in more and more of the shooting classes, the Eotech sights started to slowly disappear. When I mentioned my comments to a friend of mine who had me shoot his rifle with an Aimpoint on it, my eyes had no problem finding, focusing in and shooting the target at 100 yard and further distances. I then invested in my first Aimpoint ML3 along with QRP and Spacers and became instantly sold on it.

Since then, my interest in the Aimpoint line got to the point of becoming an Aimpoint Authorized High Volume Dealer. I offer special non-advertised pricing for viewers of Civilian Tactical Weapons who are serious about making a purchase of these Aimpoint systems. Please feel free to send me an email and I will give you a quote. I also hand test each unit before sending them to you, to ensure the product is in solid working order (although I have never heard of a bad Aimpoint out of the box). I do this since nothing is more frustrating then waiting for a new tactical accessory to then finding out it doesn’t working and needing to send it back.

In general, Aimpoint is the de-facto standard of high end optics. With that, they are not cheap, always cost more than any Eotech product family and have become the standard for Military Special Forces and Tactical Police/SWAT units around the world.

The Aimpoint Family

The Aimpoint Optics come in 2 primary categories, a standard and a mini red dot system. The standard models then come in Night Vision Device Capable (NVD) or Non-NVD. Every time you see an Aimpoint M-Series with an “L” in it’s model, that unit is not capable of being used with Night Vision. For most shooters, the “L” may not be a requirement.

Aimpoint M2

The Aimpoint M2 is the Entry level Standard site Aimpoint Optic. The M2 is a Night Vision Capable optic that has it’s military name as an M68 CCO. They come with a 4 MOA dot. This is the current standard Aimpoint Optic used by Special Forces worldwide for CQB (Close Quarters Battle). The US military has over 500,000 of these units deployed. It can be submerged in up to 75 feet of water and has over a 1 year (10,000 hour) use of constant on in daylight. It was optimized for use with 3rd Generation NVD gear.

The Aimpoint M2 list costs at $552.00

Aimpoint M3 and ML3

The Aimpoint M3 and Non-NVD capable ML3, is the upgraded version of the M2. The battery life on these units is 5 years (50,000 hours) of constant use in daylight (again, meaning if you NEVER turned it off 24/7/365 for 5 years!). The M3 and ML3 come with an outer rubber cover to provide additional protection to the unit. They come in two models, with an MOA of either 2 or 4 (I typically stock only the 2 MOA but can order 4 MOA units). You can submerge these units in up to 150 feet of water.

The Aimpoint M3 lists at $625.00 and the ML3 lists at $562.00

Aimpoint M4 and M4s

The Aimpoint M4 and M4s is the new standard of optics that Aimpoint sells for extreme use. Heavily used by Special Forces as the new standard, there has been over 750,000 of the M4 series produced. The two models of the M4 are a little different. The CompM4 has it’s battery compartment mounted on the top of the optic. The CompM4s has it’s batter compartment mounted on the bottom. This is designed for individual preference and each option has it’s benefit. I typically carry the M4s but can order regular M4 models instead. (note: CompM4 pictured to the side, CompM4s has the battery compartment moved from the top to the bottom side)

The CompM4 comes with all of the mounts needed to put the unit directly on an AR/M4 rifle. When you buy this unit, there are no other accessories needed. You can submerge the unit in up to 150 feet of water and the battery life is improved to an amazing 8 years of continuous on use from it’s single AA battery. All of the CompM4 models are compatible with NVD equipment and have 7 night vision settings and 9 day light settings. Another thing to note is the inclusion of a “kill flash anti-reflection device” added to the front of the optic.

The CompM4s is the most expensive unit, listing out at $843.00

Aimpoint Micro T-1

The Aimpoint Micro T-1 is a personal favorite for compact weapons. So if you have Semi-Automatic Compact Carbines, like a Beretta Storm or PS90, these are the ultimate optic for those types of weapons. These units are very small and can be used in a wide variety of options. You can mount them on pistols and even utilize some special spacers (that we also sell) to raise the optic for use with AR/M4 variety of weapons.

They are compatible with NVD equipment and can be submerged in up to 80 feet of water. They will operate for 5 years continuously on before having to replace the battery. This is an excellent little optic that I personally enjoy and because of it’s side has so many applications. These are also excellent for competition pistol shooting because of the very light weight properties about it but with Aimpoint quality of durability and reliability.

The Aimpoint Micro T-1 Retails for $703

Aimpoint 3x Magnifiers

Aimpoint also sells a 3x Magnifier to piggy back onto the back of any of the Aimpoint optics. I prefer to sell the complete magnifier with kit option that Aimpoint sells. This allows the optic to quickly pop on and off the back of the gun allowing you to quickly go from a long range patrol rifle to CQB combat. This combination is one of the preferred optic setups by the US Military, allowing you to quickly convert a CQB rifle to a mid range shooter without having to replace optics and re-zero the rifle. This system is extremely durable and has the absolute clearest lens and extreme duty components.

The Aimpoint 3x Magnifier Retails for $794 as a complete kit.

Closing Remarks

I understand that these Aimpoint optics are definitely not the most price conscience optics available. However, your purchase of an Aimpoint optic is pretty much an optic for life. I still have some of the old XD Optics from over 10 years ago that are in excellent working order. So I wanted to enlighten you on a quick overview of the different optics and may sometime in the future go into more detail on specifics optics.
